The original sundial is believed to be the oldest of the Canary Islands (prior to 1740). However only the east-facing quadrant of the original survives.<\/p>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;][vc_gallery type=&#8221;flexslider_slide&#8221; interval=&#8221;3&#8243; images=&#8221;16464,16465&#8243; img_size=&#8221;347&#215;200&#8243;][vc_separator type=&#8221;transparent&#8221; up=&#8221;12&#8243; down=&#8221;0&#8243;][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left;\">Church of San Francisco (S \/ C de La Palma)<\/h3>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_separator type=&#8221;small&#8221; position=&#8221;left&#8221; up=&#8221;7&#8243; down=&#8221;38&#8243;][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>This is a vertical sundial, made from tea wood, carved and painted, 108 x 108 cm, with a metallic gnomon.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">It is a replica, installed on 22 June 2012. The original was built in the early eighteenth century for the Irish merchant Macghee Theobald. This sundial presided over the main entrance of the church of San Francisco for nearly 250 years, until its retirement in the late twentieth century.<\/p>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column_inner][\/vc_row_inner][vc_separator type=&#8221;transparent&#8221; up=&#8221;59&#8243; down=&#8221;0&#8243;][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row type=&#8221;grid&#8221;][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/3&#8243;][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;2\/3&#8243;][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;][vc_gallery type=&#8221;flexslider_slide&#8221; interval=&#8221;3&#8243; images=&#8221;16466,16467&#8243; img_size=&#8221;347&#215;200&#8243;][vc_separator type=&#8221;transparent&#8221; up=&#8221;12&#8243; down=&#8221;0&#8243;][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left;\">Tazacorte<\/h3>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_separator type=&#8221;small&#8221; position=&#8221;left&#8221; up=&#8221;7&#8243; down=&#8221;38&#8243;][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This is an equatorial armillary sundial, with an swivelling analemmatic gnomon to measure the time accurately throughout the year. <strong>Located on the waterfront<\/strong>, is built of reinforced concrete and stainless steel. <strong>It consists of two sectors of open ring, attached at their midpoint, ranging in size from 288 to 348 cm diameter. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Designed by <strong>Rafael Soler Gay\u00e1<\/strong> in 2002. It currently lacks the gnomon and several pieces of external sectors, which are being repaired<\/p>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;16463&#8243; img_size=&#8221;347&#215;200&#8243;][vc_separator type=&#8221;transparent&#8221; up=&#8221;12&#8243; down=&#8221;0&#8243;][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left;\">Puerto Naos Beach<\/h3>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_separator type=&#8221;small&#8221; position=&#8221;left&#8221; up=&#8221;7&#8243; down=&#8221;38&#8243;][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>This is a vertical declining sundial.<\/strong> It is an unusual specimen, both for the material and its location. <strong>The sundial is painted directly on the fa\u00e7ade of a terrace balcony<\/strong>, and one of the drains from the terrace is used as a gnomon.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Designed and conceived by <strong>D. Conrado \u00c1lvarez Hern\u00e1ndez<\/strong> in the late 20th century.<\/p>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column_inner][\/vc_row_inner][vc_separator type=&#8221;transparent&#8221; up=&#8221;59&#8243; down=&#8221;0&#8243;][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row type=&#8221;grid&#8221;][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/3&#8243;][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;2\/3&#8243;][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;][vc_separator type=&#8221;transparent&#8221; up=&#8221;12&#8243; down=&#8221;0&#8243;][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left;\">Fuencaliente Salt Pans<\/h3>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_separator type=&#8221;small&#8221; position=&#8221;left&#8221; up=&#8221;7&#8243; down=&#8221;38&#8243;][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Under construction.<\/strong> This is a <strong>horizontal sundial<\/strong> which imitates a crystallization pond or salt pan. Inside, screen-printed tiles are embedded with a multicoloured picture of a brine shrimp (Artemia salina). The gnomon is a &#8216;raspadera&#8217; &#8211; one of the tools which the artisans use to collect salt.<\/p>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;][vc_separator type=&#8221;transparent&#8221; up=&#8221;12&#8243; down=&#8221;0&#8243;][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left;\">Others<\/h3>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_separator type=&#8221;small&#8221; position=&#8221;left&#8221; up=&#8221;7&#8243; down=&#8221;38&#8243;][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Because the sundial is a very interesting decorative and educational element, it is not surprising that we find others throughout the island of La Palma. In some schools, on the fa\u00e7ade of a private home (on the San Jos\u00e9 &#8211; Las Ledas road, Brena Baja) or even as part of the decoration in accommodation which is a part of the astrotourism group. Although it is not considered a sundial, it is interesting to note, in this section, the Volc\u00e1n de San Antonio Astronomical Viewpoint, where a standing stones use the shadow of the sun to mark the changing seasons.
