15th ApEA meetings

From June 30 to July 4, 2024, the 15th ApEA (Association for the Teaching of Astronomy) meetings will be held. It will be held on the island of La Palma, with a theme focused on space missions and extraterrestrial volcanism.

45 years have passed since the discovery of volcanic activity outside the Earth, on the satellite Io of the planet Jupiter. In 1979, analyzing the images sent by the Voyager probes, this great discovery was made that completely changed our vision of the Solar System. The island of La Palma is an example of terrestrial volcanism as well as being one of the best places in the northern hemisphere for observation. This parallelism will be one of the common threads of these 15th meetings.

The Voyager probes were launched in 1977, their mission was to explore Jupiter and Saturn. This space mission was one of the most important for the great discoveries it made and for providing the first detailed images of Jupiter, Saturn and their satellites. Space missions, and the advances they represent in Astronomy, will be the second common thread of these meetings.

During the meetings there will be presentations and workshops that will deal with these and other topics and that, as president, I invite you to discover from June 30 to July 4, on the beautiful island of La Palma.
